2016 Summer Kickoff at the Millvale Library

June 2, 2016

It’s a sure sign that summer is coming when the backyard of the Millvale Library fills with a sea of yellow. And no, we don’t mean dandelions. These were the yellow shirts of over 200 students from Shaler Elementary School who were participating in the Titan Trail Million Word Reader competition. Students gathered on Friday, May 27 for an award ceremony in which we recognized the students who read the most; some read more than 4 Million Words!Afterwards the kids brainstormed ideas to turn our backyard into the ultimate kid-friendly park.

This is just one of many activities that usher in the summer programming we look forward to all year, and what better way to kick off an exciting summer than with a party! On Saturday, June 4 from 12:00–5:00pm, we will host our Summer Kickoff Party, complete with food, refreshments, entertainment, summer reading signups, writing activities, and more!

Central to our summer activities is a Summer Reading Program, in which toddlers, kids, teens, and young adults will compete to read the most and win great prizes! Once you sign up for the program at our Summer Kickoff Party, you are eligible to start collecting stamps for reading, participating in other library programs, and more. The more stamps you collect the better your chances of winning some of our amazing prizes.

You can start collecting stamps that day for joining us at the kickoff party and participating in various activities we have planned. For example, at 1:00pm the Steel City Shakespeare Company will perform the Shakespeare comedy “Much Ado About Nothing.”  The company will also return to the library for an encore performance on Saturday, June 11 at 1:00pm

In addition to this theatrical performance, we will also have special guests from The Crawl Space Journal, a literary journal of middle grade and young adult fantasy. Youth will have the opportunity to join writers from The Crawl Space Journal for various writing activities including a blog writing workshop, an open mic session to read and share their own work, a notebook making activity, and more. These activities will take place between 3:00–5:00pm.

The day will offer great fun with theatre, reading, writing, and more! We encourage readers young and old to come down and join us for this unique opportunity to welcome a summer of reading with the Millvale Community Library.
