RADical Days is for Everyone

When I first moved to Pittsburgh in 2013, I was excited to be surrounded by culture in its many forms: in particular, I was enamored with the city’s many museums, conservatories, and zoos. Unfortunately, the admission prices were not within my “recent-college-graduate-on-the-job-hunt” budget – that is, until I heard about RADical Days. My first visits to the National Aviary, the Phipps Conservatory, and the Mattress Factory were during the 2015 RADical Days, and all three were amazing experiences.

RADical Days began 16 years ago as a project sponsored by the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) and the many organizations that it funds as a thank you to residents for the sales tax dollars they spend. This year’s event is running from September 22nd to October 15th and features 51 free admission events, and more than two dozen special performances and art experiences. These events are all-ages and span the realms of the arts, sports, history, and architecture.

I love RADical Days because, as RAD Board Chair Daniel J. Griffin explains, the “free admissions and performances are diverse, accessible and open to all.” This closely connects to the library’s mission of education and entertainment that is accessible to everyone. I also love it because when else can you say hello to a cute baby sloth for free?

For a full list of events, visit their website. There’s something for everyone – including us! You may catch our Maker Educator Roman at the last RADical Days event, Maker Faire Pittsburgh, which will take over the Children’s Museum and Buhl Community Park on October 14th and 15th.
