The Millvale Community Library and the Millvale EcoDistrict are dedicated to increasing educational opportunities on sustainability and community activism. In that vein,  we are introducing an air quality fellowship for local teens!

The 2018 Teen Air Quality Fellowship application process is open to high school students (Classes of 2019 – 2022), who are interested in a summer-long fellowship on air quality.

The purpose of the fellowship is to look closely at air quality issues in the Allegheny River Valley communities of Millvale, Etna, and Sharpsburg.  Program goals include helping students better understand negative impacts of poor air quality, introducing ways they can help combat poor air quality (both in their own homes and in their communities), and exposing students to clean-tech careers and renewable energy.   Additionally, the participants will plan and build an air monitoring station on the grounds of the Millvale Community Library.

From the pool of applicants, our review team will select 10 student participants. Final participants must reside in one of the three named communities, commit to the entire program, and demonstrate a true interest in air quality issues, community activism, and sustainability.    Participants will be chosen based on the strength of the application, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, mentor, or counselor, and successful participation in an in-person interview.  The fellowship will begin in June, 2018 and end in August, 2018.  During that time, students will be expected to attend five half-day sessions.  At the end of the program, students who demonstrate adequate participation will receive a $100 participation award. The fellowship is funded through a grant made to our partner organization, New Sun Rising, by The Heinz Endowments.

The application process will be open March 1 through March 31, 2018.   At the close of the application process, our team will begin interviewing and selecting student for participation.  Selected students will be notified on May 1, 2018.  Paper applications can also be obtained by calling the Millvale Community Library at 412.822.7081 or visiting the library at 213 Grant Avenue, Millvale.
