November 10th, 1:00 PM: Britsburgh Presents Poppies for Remembrance

An event for children (ages 6-13). Parents naturally are welcome!

One hundred years ago, on November 11, 1918 at 11:00 am, the famous eleventh hour of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, the guns along the Western Front in Belgium and France at last fell silent, signaling the end of World War I, a terrible conflict that had raged in Europe and beyond for four long years. Millions of soldiers from countries in Europe and around the world, including the United States, fought in this war. Many were killed and many more suffered terrible wounds that would affect them for the rest of their lives.

At Poppies are for Remembrance, hosted by The Millvale Community Library, and presented by #Britsburgh, children and their parents are invited to learn more about World War I, why it was one of the most important events in history, and how it still affects us and is remembered today, in the United States, the United Kingdom and beyond.

Two Duquesne University students, Robert Gwiazda, education and social studies major who traveled to England, Belgium and France this past summer to study the war and visit the battlefields and cemeteries of World War I, will share with the children his impressions of the battlefields of France (The Somme) and Belgium (Ypres Salient), and will tell tell the kids about the development of the tank and other weapons. Ryan Aiken, military veteran and History major, will share how the military today remembers World War I. Finally Kim Szczypinski of Britsburgh, who lead two Duquesne University World War I Centenary study abroad tours, will discuss with the children memorial customs in the UK and the US that grew out of the First World War experience – principally the poppy.

Our vision is for the children of today to learn about the great sacrifice their forefathers made during WWI. Europe, and indeed the United States, would be a very different place were it not for the outcome of this war and the United States and the UK’s special relationship. Lest we forget!
